Weather Situation – Northern Western Australia
Severe Tropical Cyclone Errol has rapidly intensified as it moves towards the
south, well offshore from the Kimberley. An upper-level trough is expected to
cause the system to move back towards the east today, approaching the northwest
Kimberley coast later Friday or on Saturday. Environmental conditions will
become much less favourable from Thursday and the system will weaken
significantly before reaching the coast, but is forecast to still be at cyclone
intensity. Elsewhere, a trough over the inland Pilbara will move slowly
eastward today, reaching the North Interior on Friday. A new trough will
develop near the west Pilbara coast during the weekend.
Weather Situation – Southern and Central Western Australia
A ridge over southern WA is weakening before a trough pushes eastward through
southern and central parts of the State during today and Friday. A stronger
high pressure ridge will develop from the west in the wake of the trough. The
high will move through the Southern Ocean during the weekend as a new trough
starts to deepen offshore from the west coast by Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday 17 April
Showers, thunderstorms and areas of moderate to heavy rain from the Wheat Belt
into the Goldfields, western Eucla and inland parts of the South East Coastal
District. Possible showers and storms in the northern and eastern Great
Southern, Central West, southern and eastern Gascoyne, and western South
Interior. Possible showers over the South West and South Coastal District, and
in northern parts of the Lower West during the morning. Areas of early fog
inland from the coast in the South West and South Coastal District. Chance of
showers and thunderstorms in the east Pilbara and northern and western
Kimberley as Severe Tropical Cyclone Errol remains well offshore from the coast.
Forecast for Friday 18 April
Showers and thunderstorms over the northeast Pilbara, North Interior and
Kimberley, likely increasing to squally rain over the northwest of the region
with the approach of Tropical Cyclone Errol. Showers and thunderstorms in the
South Interior and Eucla, gradually contracting eastward out of the Goldfields
through the day. Mild with showers about the south coastal districts. Possible
showers in the morning through the Great Southern and eastern Wheat Belt.
Forecast for Saturday 19 April
Showers and thunderstorms over the northeast Pilbara, northern North Interior
and Kimberley, likely increasing to squally rain with possible heavy falls in
the northwest Kimberley, depending on the track of Tropical Cyclone Errol and
how quickly it weakens. Showers over the south coastal districts and southern
South Interior, most likely during the morning. Mild conditions throughout
southern and central WA.
Forecast for Sunday 20 April
Showers and thunderstorms over the Kimberley and Pilbara. Chance of showers in
the North Interior, and early in the day about the south coast. Possible
afternoon thunderstorms in the north-central Gascoyne. Remaining mild in the
eastern South West Land Division, Goldfields and Eucla but starting to warm
down the west coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm WST Thursday.
